Platelet rich plasma is a platelet concentration in a plasma suspension that is derived from a patient's own body. These concentrations are 4 to 8 times above peripheral blood levels and contain a plethora of growth factors and bioactive mediator molecules.
Once platelet rich plasma is activated, it transforms into a fibrin scaffold, eluding growth factors, cytokines, chemokines, cell adhesion molecules, acute phase porteins and proteins related to lipid metabolism. This biodegradable substance provides a matrix-like structure and sends signals to the body for cell proliferation, differentiation and migration to the injured tissue.
